Description/Symbolism

Obverse Description.  On a Gold metal device 1 5/8 inches (4.13 cm) in height and 1 5/16 inches (3.33cm) in diameter,  an Argent oblong oval with the top forming a pointed curve surrounded by four wrapped laurel branches, two originating from the top and two originating from the base with leaves meeting just above half way point, forming an oblong oval wreath, overall an America bald eagle displayed and supporting an image of the POW flag, in his dexter talons an olive branch and in his sinister talons 13 arrows, above a triangle with five mullets all Or/Gold.

Obverse Symbolism.  The American bald eagle displayed holding an olive branch and 13 arrows is a national symbol. The triangle with stars represents a folded American flag.    

Reverse Description.  An oblong oval with the top forming a pointed curve surrounded by four wrapped laurel branches, two originating from the top and two originating from the base with leaves meeting just above half way point, are the words inscribed, “FOR MERITIORIOUS SERVICE” and above is a representation of a folded American flag with “DEFENSE POW/MIA ACCOUNTING AGENCY” arching over the top.

Reverse Symbolism.  The triangle with stars represents a folded American flag.

Ribbon. The ribbon is Scarlet, Bluebird, White, and Black. Scarlet represents the blood of those lost on past recovery missions. Bluebird is representative of DoD and DPAA is a DoD agency. White symbolizes honor and integrity in which the mission is accomplished. Black alludes to the solemn nature of the agency’s mission.
